Nigeria Revenue Service Announces New Taxpayer Identification System Nationwide
The Nigeria Revenue Service in partnership with the Joint Revenue Board has officially announced the implementation of a new nationwide Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system.
According to a public notice issued in Abuja on May 18, 2026, the initiative is being introduced in line with Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandate all taxable persons in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID.
The new Tax ID system is designed to serve as a unified identity for taxpayers across federal and sub-national tax authorities, with the aim of improving coordination, reducing duplication, and enhancing efficiency in tax administration.
Authorities explained that the initiative forms part of broader reforms targeted at modernizing Nigeria’s tax system, strengthening accountability, and improving service delivery.
Among the key benefits highlighted are simplified tax registration and payment processes, improved transparency in taxpayer records, better revenue tracking, and harmonization of tax-related data across government agencies.
The notice also revealed that the new Tax ID system will replace the existing TIN Validation API currently used by Ministries, Departments, Agencies, financial institutions, and other organizations.
Organizations requiring integration and validation services for the new system have been advised to contact the appropriate departments of the Joint Revenue Board and the Nigeria Revenue Service for technical guidelines and API access.
The development marks another major step in Nigeria’s ongoing digital tax reform efforts as authorities seek to strengthen revenue generation and improve tax compliance nationwide.
