NOA Enugu Urges Residents to Prioritize Regular Blood Pressure Checks as Hypertension Awareness Intensifies
The National Orientation Agency, Enugu State Directorate, has called on residents to take regular blood pressure checks seriously as part of efforts to combat hypertension, described as one of the leading causes of premature death globally.
The agency made the call during its awareness campaign to mark World Hypertension Day, emphasizing that hypertension remains a “silent killer” that often goes undetected until it leads to severe complications such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, or sudden death.
According to global health data referenced by the agency, over 1.4 billion people worldwide are currently living with hypertension. However, a significant number remain undiagnosed, while only a fraction of those diagnosed have their condition properly controlled.
The NOA Enugu office stressed that early detection through routine blood pressure checks is simple, accessible, and can be done at health centers or pharmacies, often at little or no cost.
Health officials involved in the campaign urged individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles, including regular physical exercise, reduced salt intake, balanced diets, avoidance of excessive alcohol consumption, and quitting tobacco use.
They also emphasized the importance of medication adherence for those already diagnosed, noting that hypertension management is a long-term commitment that should not be interrupted.
The agency further encouraged communities, families, and healthcare providers to work together in strengthening awareness and improving access to healthcare services to reduce preventable deaths linked to the condition.
The statement concluded with a reminder that faith and medical treatment are not mutually exclusive, urging patients to comply with prescribed medications while maintaining their personal beliefs.
