Gunmen Invade Catholic Church in Enugu, Abduct Seminarian and Others, Raising Fresh Security Concerns
Residents of Affa Community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State have been thrown into shock following the reported invasion of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Inoyi, by suspected armed kidnappers during a Sunday service on August 2.
According to accounts from community members, the incident occurred as worshippers gathered for Mass despite the morning rainfall. Witnesses said those approaching the church encountered frightened congregants fleeing the premises after armed men, reportedly numbering about seven, stormed the church and abducted several individuals, including a seminarian.
Locals said they immediately pursued the attackers in an effort to rescue the victims. However, they explained that their efforts were unsuccessful because the kidnappers were heavily armed, while community members and local vigilante groups lacked the weapons and equipment needed to confront them safely.
The incident has heightened fear among residents, who say the worsening security situation has left rural communities increasingly vulnerable. They appealed to the relevant security agencies and the Enugu State Government to strengthen security presence in the area, improve intelligence gathering, and take urgent measures to protect lives and property.
Community members also expressed concern that one of the victims was an indigene who had returned home to bury his late father, describing the abduction as a heartbreaking development that has deepened the grief of an already bereaved family.
The reported attack has renewed calls for enhanced security around places of worship and other public gathering locations, with residents urging authorities to act decisively to secure the release of the abducted victims and restore confidence in the safety of communities across the state.
As of the time of this report, authorities had not officially confirmed the number of victims or provided further details on the incident. Residents remain hopeful that ongoing security efforts will lead to the safe rescue of those abducted.
