Henry Shield Alleges NBC Fines Media Houses Over Government Criticism, Raises Concerns on Press Freedom
Hon. Henry Shield has raised concerns over what he describes as increasing regulatory pressure on media organisations in Nigeria, alleging that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) now issues fines to broadcasters whenever critical commentary against the government is aired.
Speaking on the issue, Shield claimed that several media houses have reportedly been sanctioned for content deemed critical of government officials or policies, a development he says undermines democratic principles and freedom of expression.
“Do you know NBC now fines media houses whenever anyone criticizes the government on their platform? If people like Arise tell you how much fine they’ve slammed, you won’t believe. This is not democracy,” he stated.
His remarks have sparked renewed debate around media regulation, censorship concerns, and the balance between broadcasting standards and press freedom in Nigeria.
While regulatory authorities maintain that broadcasting guidelines are designed to ensure responsible journalism and prevent misinformation or harmful content, critics argue that enforcement practices may sometimes appear inconsistent or overly restrictive.
Media rights advocates continue to call for greater transparency in regulatory actions and stronger protections for journalistic independence, especially in politically sensitive environments.
The comments add to ongoing national discussions about the role of media in democracy and the limits of regulatory oversight in a pluralistic society.
