Concerns Mount Over Smart School Projects in Enugu as Residents Question Cost, Completion, and Impact

Concerns have continued to grow across parts of Enugu State over the state government’s Smart School initiative, which was introduced as a flagship education reform programme aimed at transforming learning across all 260 wards.

The initiative, widely promoted as a modernisation effort in the education sector under the administration of Peter Mbah, was designed to provide improved infrastructure, digital learning tools, and upgraded classroom environments for pupils and students across the state.

While the concept has been praised in principle, some residents and community stakeholders have expressed concern that several project sites appear incomplete or inactive, raising questions about implementation and long-term sustainability.

Communities such as Obinagu in Udi LGA, Obinofia Ndiagu Ward in Ezeagu LGA, and Neke Uno Ward 2 in Isi Uzo LGA have been frequently mentioned by residents who allege that construction work in some of these locations has either slowed significantly or stopped.

Critics argue that while substantial budgetary allocations and increased government revenue have been recorded in recent years, there is a growing need for clearer accountability and measurable outcomes in the education sector.

Concerns have also been raised about whether the Smart Schools fully meet the requirements of modern learning environments, which typically include stable electricity supply, internet connectivity, ICT laboratories, science facilities, trained personnel, and accessible infrastructure for all learners.

Some residents further argue that the location of certain school facilities far from original community school centres may be contributing to access challenges for pupils, particularly in rural areas facing economic hardship and transportation difficulties.

Despite these concerns, stakeholders acknowledge the importance of educational investment and emphasize that the success of the Smart School initiative will ultimately depend on proper completion, effective management, and community accessibility.

Calls have been made for increased transparency, monitoring, and public engagement to ensure that education investments translate into real improvements in learning outcomes and not abandoned structures.

The debate continues to generate discussion across communities in Enugu State, with residents urging government to complete ongoing projects and address concerns surrounding implementation gaps.
