Onoh’s Criticism of Uche Nnaji’s One-Term Pledge Reflects Political Cynicism, Says Dr. Robert Ngwu

Political analyst and commentator, Dr. Robert Ngwu, has strongly defended Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji following criticisms surrounding his public declaration to serve only one term if elected Governor of Enugu State in 2027.

In a detailed statement, Ngwu argued that attacks against Nnaji’s pledge reflect political cynicism and distrust rather than any lack of integrity on the part of the PDP governorship candidate.

According to him, Chief Uche Nnaji has already demonstrated uncommon political sacrifice and honour in his public life, recalling events from 1999 when Nnaji reportedly stepped aside after winning election to represent Enugu East Senatorial Zone in order to support Chief Jim Nwobodo’s emergence as Senate President.

“A man who sacrificed a Senate seat for collective interest does not need lectures on honour, zoning, or political trust,” Ngwu stated.

He maintained that such a political decision remains rare in Nigeria’s political history and should serve as evidence that Nnaji’s public commitments deserve to be taken seriously.

Ngwu further criticized those questioning the sincerity of the one-term pledge, arguing that many of the same critics often advocate zoning and fairness when it aligns with their own political interests.

“You cannot praise zoning in the morning and condemn a man for respecting it in the evening,” he remarked.

The statement also shifted attention toward broader governance concerns in Enugu State, including rising living costs, taxation pressures on businesses, salary concerns among workers, and the economic realities facing ordinary residents.

Ngwu argued that the real political conversation should focus on accountability, economic management, and policies affecting the welfare of citizens rather than attacks on voluntary political commitments.

The debate surrounding Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji’s one-term declaration has continued to generate reactions across political circles in Enugu State, with supporters describing it as a move aimed at promoting trust, balance, and political stability ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
