Uzodinma Warns Democracy at Risk Without Strong Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections

Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors' Forum, Hope Uzodinma, has stated that Nigeria's democracy may be at risk if opposition political parties fail to build strong structures capable of providing credible competition against the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Uzodinma made the remarks during the APC presidential primary exercise in Imo State, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged as the party's preferred candidate for the 2027 presidential election. Punch Newspapers +1

According to the governor, democracy thrives on active opposition and healthy political competition, urging opposition parties to strengthen their grassroots structures rather than complain about APC dominance.

He also pointed to the APC's electronic membership registration and validation exercise as a major factor behind the party's growing grassroots strength across the country.

Uzodinma further argued that the level of participation witnessed during the APC primary exercise reflected the ruling party's strong support base ahead of the 2027 elections, while commending President Tinubu's leadership and political strategy.

The comments have since generated reactions across political circles, with analysts debating the state of opposition politics and the future of Nigeria's multi-party democracy as preparations gradually intensify toward the next general elections.
