The Political Nomad Strikes Again: Kenneth Okonkwo Flips on Atiku Abubakar Over Amaechi’s VP Slot, Vows to Boycott 2027 Coalition Campaign
ABUJA, NIGERIA — The volatile opposition merger ahead of the 2027 general elections has suffered a severe blow as veteran actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has officially fallen out with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Okonkwo's sudden U-turn comes amid widespread political reports that the grand coalition under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has bypassed him, settling instead on former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, from the South-South geopolitical zone to run alongside Atiku.
Reacting to the development through his verified social media handles, a deeply disgruntled Okonkwo did not hide his rage. The legal practitioner launched into a blistering critique of the decision, labeling the selection of a South-South running mate an unpardonable structural injustice against the people of the South-East. In a strongly worded public statement, Okonkwo explicitly warned that he would completely refuse to campaign for or support any presidential ticket that systematically excludes a South-Easterner from its executive vanguard.
Okonkwo recalled that the ADC was originally founded in 2005 by Chief Ralphs Nwosu, a prominent son of the South-East. He emphasized that Nwosu made a massive, painful sacrifice by stepping down from his long-held position as National Chairman in 2025 to allow the grand opposition coalition to form a unified front to take over power.
Okonkwo argued that it is mathematically and morally unacceptable for the zone to sacrifice both the National Chairmanship and the Presidential ticket, only to be denied the Vice Presidential slot as well. Pointing out that the South-East geopolitical zone has failed to produce either a President or a Vice President since the return of democracy in 1999, Okonkwo declared:
"I did not join the coalition to assist in the further marginalisation of my own people. If this rumor is true, it is unfortunate... It will amount to an unpardonable injustice to deny us the Vice President in 2027."
Okonkwo’s latest public outburst has triggered a massive wave of ridicule and harsh criticisms across digital platforms, with political commentators firmly labeling him a "political mad nomad." Observers point out that Okonkwo has built a notorious reputation for brief, highly opportunistic stays across nearly every major political party in Nigeria—moving from the APC to the Labour Party, briefly aligning with the PDP, joining Atiku's ADC coalition movement, and now flipping on his latest principal the moment his personal vice-presidential aspirations were crushed.
Inside sources within the ADC coalition secretariat in Abuja have laughed off Okonkwo's threats of a boycott. Party insiders revealed that Okonkwo’s erratic public behavior, continuous legal fights, and highly disruptive media presence had long ruled him out as a serious, steady running mate for Atiku Abubakar. With the selection of Rotimi Amaechi calculated to lock down the critical, oil-rich South-South vote, coalition leaders have firmly told Okonkwo to accept the party's choice or continue his wandering journey to yet another political platform.
