Tension in Enugu: PDP Accuses Outgoing Igbo-Eze North Mayor of Using Security Agencies to Block Ward Meetings, Cites Official Letter to DPO
A political standoff is unfolding in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) accuses the outgoing Council Mayor, Hon. Uche Ogalla, of abusing his powers by allegedly directing security agencies to bar PDP members and officials from holding peaceful political gatherings within the locality.
The controversy broke out following reports that security agencies actively restricted PDP members from conducting a scheduled ward engagement meeting in Ozzi Ward 6. According to party sources, the restrictions were enforced despite formal channels being followed to ensure a peaceful outing.
Evidence obtained from an official document, visible in 1003900624.jpg, reveals that the PDP had proactively sought security coverage for their activities. The letter, dated May 30, 2026, and signed by the Igbo-Eze North PDP Chairman, Hon. Hillary Ayogu C., was formally addressed to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Nigerian Police Force, Igbo-Eze North Division.
The letter, titled "Application for Security Protection During Our Political Wards Consultation Tours," explicitly notified authorities of their grassroots outreach program tagged "Visit Every Political Wards Consultation Tour in Igbo-Eze North LGA." Handwriting on the document confirms that an original copy was collected and acknowledged by ASP Abu Mohammed on the same day, May 30, 2026. Copies were also sent to military services, the DSS, Civil Defence Corps, NDLEA, and the Neighborhood Watch.
Reacting to the sudden blockade, political stakeholders and party loyalists have called out the Mayor's actions, reminding him that public office is a position of trust and responsibility.
"As the Chief Security Officer of the local government, his duty is to ensure the safety and security of all residents regardless of their political affiliation," a statement tracking the incident noted. "The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees every citizen the rights to freedom of movement, peaceful assembly, and association. No individual or political office holder has the authority to deny citizens these fundamental rights."
Critics and democracy watchdogs have described the alleged deployment of state apparatus against opposition parties as undemocratic, retrogressive, and entirely inconsistent with the principles of a free and fair political environment.
As tension mounts ahead of future transitions, residents and stakeholders are calling on the Enugu State Police Command and higher authorities to intervene, maintain neutrality, and ensure that democracy is allowed to breathe freely in Igbo-Eze North.
