A brewing confrontation between local traders and market authorities has forced the Enugu State Government to intervene, explicitly banning any planned shutdowns of major markets within the state capital ahead of a scheduled political rally on Saturday. The government's directive comes amidst intense pushback from residents and everyday business owners who have fiercely spoken out against being forced to forfeit their daily bread to satisfy political agendas.

​The official stance of the administration was made public on Friday, June 5, 2026, via a formal statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo.

​According to the state government, the alleged plan by certain market leaders to shut down commercial activities completely contradicts the ongoing administrative efforts to boost investment, ease of doing business, and daily productivity across the state. The Ministry of Information emphasized that individuals must feel completely free to go about their legal businesses without fear of intimidation. The Commissioner noted that this exact commitment to preserving unhindered economic activity was what originally informed the administration's decisive actions to permanently dismantle the illegal and disruptive Monday sit-at-home orders in the region.
