South Africa Raises Alarm as Xenophobia Backlash Hits Artists, Businesses Across Africa

South Africa's Justice Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has raised concerns over the country's worsening image across Africa, saying allegations of xenophobia are beginning to have serious economic and cultural consequences for South Africans abroad.

According to the minister, several South African artists have reportedly lost performance opportunities in other African countries, with some seeing their scheduled shows cancelled amid growing resentment over reported attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa.

Kubayi noted that the backlash is not limited to the entertainment industry, as South African businesses operating across the continent are also facing increasing challenges. She said the government is working through diplomatic channels and engaging with affected businesses to mitigate the impact.

The minister acknowledged that South Africa's international reputation has suffered and stressed the need to address both the perception and realities surrounding xenophobia. However, she maintained that South Africans should not be collectively labelled as xenophobic, emphasizing that the government remains committed to promoting lawful migration policies while protecting the rights of all residents.

Recent reports of anti-immigrant protests and attacks on foreign-owned businesses have heightened concerns across the continent, particularly among citizens of countries such as Nigeria, Mozambique, and Malawi.

Human rights advocates have linked the incidents to economic hardship, unemployment, and tensions surrounding undocumented migration. The developments have also sparked criticism on social media and among African supporters during international sporting events, further intensifying scrutiny of South Africa's treatment of foreign nationals.

South African authorities say efforts are ongoing to strengthen regional cooperation, protect lawful residents, and improve the country's standing across the African continent.
