Senate Summons SEDC Leadership, Demands Detailed Account of Spending and Project Implementation

The leadership of the South East Development Commission has been summoned by the Senate Committee overseeing the commission as lawmakers intensify scrutiny of the agency's financial management and project execution.

According to reports, the Senate Committee fixed June 9, 2026, for an oversight and interactive session with the commission's management, during which lawmakers are expected to demand a comprehensive account of funds received, expenditures incurred, and progress made on developmental projects across the South-East.

The move comes months after the Senate approved and reviewed the commission's proposed ₦140 billion budget for 2026 while warning that the agency must not become an avenue for mismanagement of public resources. Lawmakers had previously emphasized that the commission was established to address decades of infrastructural deficits, economic challenges, and developmental concerns within the region.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on SEDC, Orji Uzor Kalu, had earlier warned that the National Assembly would maintain strict oversight of the commission to ensure transparency, accountability, and measurable development outcomes for the people of the South-East.

The commission, led by Managing Director Mark Okoye, previously unveiled an ambitious plan aimed at transforming the South-East into a major economic hub over the next decade through investments in infrastructure, industrialization, entrepreneurship, security, and regional integration.

Political observers say the forthcoming session is expected to provide clarity on how resources allocated to the commission are being utilized and whether ongoing programmes are delivering the intended benefits to communities across the five South-East states.

The development underscores growing demands for transparency and accountability as expectations continue to rise regarding the commission's role in driving economic growth and regional development.
