Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar Dies in Kidnappers’ Captivity, Triggers National Outrage Over Rising Insecurity

The death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in the hands of his abductors has sparked widespread grief and renewed debate over the state of security in Nigeria.

Major General Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and respected military officer, was abducted on May 30, 2026, while travelling through Katsina State alongside his wife and driver on their way to attend a family wedding. Despite rescue efforts by security agencies, the retired officer reportedly died in captivity on June 13 after suffering complications related to diabetes and hypertension.

His death was confirmed by the Defence Headquarters, which described the incident as a painful loss not only to his family but also to the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the nation at large.

In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the military said every available operational resource had been deployed in an attempt to secure the retired officer's safe release. The Defence Headquarters noted that General Abubakar served Nigeria with distinction throughout his military career, holding several strategic appointments and making significant contributions to national security and counter-insurgency operations.

The military further vowed to intensify ongoing operations against terrorist and criminal networks responsible for kidnappings and attacks across the country, assuring Nigerians that those behind such crimes would be brought to justice.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also expressed shock and sadness over the former military officer's death. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended condolences to the bereaved family, the Katsina State Government, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Tinubu reiterated his administration's commitment to combating terrorism and banditry, stressing that the government would not negotiate with terrorists or bow to demands for the release of detained criminal elements.

The President described the incident as a defining moment in Nigeria's fight against insecurity and vowed that bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terrorism would continue to face the full force of the law.

The tragedy also attracted reactions from opposition leaders, who described the incident as evidence of the growing security crisis confronting the nation.

Presidential candidate of NDC Peter Obi said he received the news with deep shock and sadness, describing the death of the retired general as a national tragedy. He noted that when even retired senior military officers are no longer safe from kidnappers, it reflects the severity of the security emergency facing the country.

Similarly, former Kano State Governor and vice presidential candidate of NDC Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso lamented the death of General Abubakar, describing it as a tragic reminder of the deteriorating security situation across Nigeria. He urged authorities to intensify efforts to secure the release of those still being held captive by criminal groups.

The death of the retired general has further heightened concerns over persistent attacks, kidnappings, and violent crimes across several parts of the country, particularly in the North-West and North-Central regions.
