Peter Obi Urges Nigerians to Defend Their Votes, Sparks Debate Over Election Rigging Remarks
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to take greater responsibility in safeguarding the electoral process by remaining vigilant at polling units and ensuring their votes are properly counted.
Speaking during an engagement in the United States, Obi argued that voter participation should not end after casting ballots. According to him, citizens must remain at polling centres and actively monitor the process if they want their votes to count.
Obi was quoted as saying that elections are often manipulated because many voters leave immediately after voting, only to later complain about the outcome. He emphasized that protecting votes requires collective civic responsibility and sustained citizen engagement throughout the electoral process.
The remarks have sparked mixed reactions across political circles and social media platforms. Supporters of the former Anambra governor agreed with his position, arguing that voter apathy and inadequate monitoring of election procedures create opportunities for electoral malpractice.
Critics, however, described the comments as unfair to voters, noting that election irregularities are often linked to factors beyond citizens' control, including violence, intimidation, logistical challenges, and administrative failures by electoral authorities.
During the engagement, Obi also reiterated his position on the need for dialogue in addressing separatist agitations in the Southeast. He called for the release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu and advocated engagement with aggrieved groups as part of efforts to promote national unity and stability.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum, Obi's comments have reignited discussions on electoral integrity, voter responsibility, and the reforms needed to strengthen Nigeria's democratic process.
