Pat Utomi Warns of “State Capture” in Nigeria, Blames Leadership Imposition for Democratic Decline
Political economist and public affairs commentator Pat Utomi has expressed concern over the state of democracy in Nigeria, warning that continued imposition of leaders and weak electoral processes are undermining national development.
Speaking during Citizen Monitors Live, Utomi argued that Nigeria’s current political challenges are the result of long-standing issues in leadership selection and democratic practice.
He stated that when citizens are unable to freely choose their leaders, it often leads to governance failure and public dissatisfaction, adding that this trend has contributed significantly to the country’s present condition.
Utomi further described the situation as what he termed “state capture,” alleging that key democratic institutions are being weakened, including the legislature and judiciary.
According to him, the effectiveness of democratic governance is reduced when institutions meant to provide checks and balances are compromised or influenced by political interests.
He also compared Nigeria’s trajectory with other West African countries, suggesting that inconsistent democratic practices have slowed institutional development and public trust in governance.
The professor criticized the political class, describing them as disconnected from the realities faced by ordinary citizens and overly focused on political control rather than national development.
His comments have since generated discussions across political and civic spaces, with analysts interpreting them as part of a broader debate on electoral reforms, governance accountability, and democratic consolidation in Nigeria.
As political activities continue ahead of future elections, concerns over electoral credibility and institutional independence remain central to national discourse.
