Oyo School Abductions Trigger Protests as Tinubu Orders Security Measures; NDC Distances Itself from Protest Rumours

Tension remains high in Oyo State following the abduction of students and teachers from schools in Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area.

According to reports, armed attackers raided the communities on May 15, killing a teacher identified as Michael Oyedokun and abducting dozens of students and education workers. The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents, parents, and civil society groups.

In response to the worsening situation, angry residents reportedly staged protests in parts of Oyo State, blocking roads and demanding urgent government intervention to secure the release of the victims and improve security in vulnerable communities.

The crisis has also affected the education sector, with the Nigeria Union of Teachers reportedly commencing an indefinite strike action beginning June 1 as part of efforts to draw attention to the plight of the abducted victims and broader security concerns affecting schools.

Amid mounting pressure, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced a series of security measures aimed at addressing the situation. According to the President, the Federal Government has approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in collaboration with the Oyo State Government, alongside the deployment of a specialized rescue team and additional security interventions targeted at affected communities.

The President reiterated his administration's commitment to ensuring that schools remain safe environments for learning and vowed that efforts would continue until the abducted victims are rescued.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Democratic Congress has issued a statement distancing itself from social media messages alleging plans for nationwide protests over insecurity.

In a statement signed by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party urged the public to disregard what it described as false and misleading information.

The statement emphasized that the party does not support actions capable of causing a breakdown of law and order and remains committed to pursuing change through democratic processes and the ballot box.

According to the NDC, political disagreements and public concerns should be addressed through peaceful engagement and electoral participation rather than actions that could threaten public safety.

As security agencies intensify efforts to locate the abducted students and teachers, many Nigerians continue to call for stronger protection of schools and rural communities across the country.
