Outrage as Video Shows Bystanders Scooping Petrol Near Injured Victims
A disturbing video circulating online has sparked widespread outrage after it reportedly showed bystanders scooping spilled petrol while injured victims lay unattended on a dirt road.
The footage, shared by an entertainment page on social media, appears to show men and women prioritizing fuel collection over assisting those injured at the scene, raising concerns about public safety and human response during emergencies.
The video has generated mixed reactions online, with many users expressing shock and disappointment over what they described as a decline in compassion and civic responsibility. Others attributed the behaviour to economic hardship and rising fuel costs, while some questioned the authenticity and exact location of the footage.
Fuel scooping from accident scenes has remained a recurring and dangerous practice in parts of West Africa, often linked to poverty, fuel scarcity, and weak emergency response systems. Similar incidents in the past have led to fatal explosions and mass casualties.
Authorities and safety advocates continue to warn against approaching fuel spill sites due to the high risk of fire, explosion, and further loss of life.
