Nigeria’s 2027 Presidential Race Takes Shape as Tinubu, Opposition Figures, and Party Candidates Emerge
Nigeria’s political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections is becoming increasingly defined as parties across the country move from internal preparations into the final stages of candidate selection.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election, confirming his position as the party’s flagbearer following internal party decisions and national-level support within the ruling party structure.

In the opposition camp, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun concluding its internal processes, with reports indicating Senator Sandy Onor emerging in recent party developments as a key presidential figure following the party’s screening and consensus activities.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has become a major opposition coalition platform, continues to host multiple influential aspirants, including Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi, reflecting ongoing competition within the party structure over who will secure the final presidential ticket.
Smaller but active political parties are also positioning their candidates. The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is reported to have Adewole Adebayo as a prominent flagbearer figure, while Omoyele Sowore remains the standard-bearer for the African Action Congress (AAC), continuing his long-standing participation in Nigeria’s presidential contests.
The political space also includes other emerging aspirants and coalition-linked figures such as Peter Obi, who remains associated with opposition realignment discussions, while other stakeholders across parties continue consultations ahead of primaries and final nominations.
Analysts note that Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race is still fluid, with party alliances, court disputes, defections, and coalition negotiations expected to significantly reshape the final list of candidates before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) publishes the official ballot.
As party primaries continue across the country, the coming months are expected to determine the final lineup of contenders who will battle for Nigeria’s highest office in what is already shaping up to be a highly competitive election cycle.
