NDC Faces Post-Primary Tensions as Party Leadership Moves to Calm Aggrieved Aspirants Nationwide
Fresh tensions have emerged within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following the conclusion of its nationwide primaries, with reports of disagreements, protests, and planned legal actions by some aspirants in several states.
The development comes just days after the party conducted presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly primaries across the country. Party leaders had repeatedly emphasized that all results would be collated and announced through official national channels, warning against unauthorized declarations and parallel processes.
Prior to the primaries, the NDC opened participation to all aspirants who had purchased Expression of Interest Forms, describing the move as necessary to ensure inclusiveness and reduce internal disputes. The party also promised a transparent appeal process for aggrieved contestants.
One of the major challenges currently confronting the party is managing the expectations of numerous aspirants who joined the NDC following recent political realignments. The party has witnessed rapid growth in recent months, attracting several prominent politicians from different political backgrounds. Political analysts say such rapid expansion often creates competition for tickets and leadership positions.
The NDC leadership had earlier dismissed several viral reports claiming that winners had emerged before the scheduled primaries, describing such reports as fake and misleading. The party urged members to rely only on official communications and avoid actions capable of causing confusion.
Despite the disagreements, party stakeholders are calling for restraint and unity. Senior leaders have reportedly intensified consultations with aspirants and supporters across the country in a bid to prevent internal disputes from escalating into prolonged legal battles.
Political observers note that while court actions remain a constitutional right, prolonged litigation could distract the party from its preparations for the 2027 general elections. They argue that reconciliation efforts, dialogue, and internal dispute-resolution mechanisms may offer a faster path to restoring unity.
As the dust settles on the primaries, attention is now shifting toward candidate ratification, reconciliation efforts, and preparations for the next phase of the electoral process.
For many party members, the challenge ahead is not merely winning primaries but maintaining cohesion in a rapidly expanding political movement seeking to position itself as a major force in Nigeria's political landscape.
