June 12 Remains Defining Moment in Nigeria’s Democracy – Afenifere Scribe, Ebiseni

The Secretary General of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Chief Sola Ebiseni, has said that June 12, 1993, remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a major milestone in the country’s political history.

Speaking with journalists in Akure, Ondo State, Ebiseni said the annulled presidential election represented more than a political contest, describing it as a powerful expression of Nigerians’ collective desire to determine their own future after years of military rule.

He said the significance of the date lies in the unity and democratic consciousness demonstrated by Nigerians during the period, noting that it marked a turning point in the nation’s struggle for civil rule.

According to him, “June 12, 1993 is an eloquent testimony of the determination of Nigerians to take the nation’s destiny and its democracy into their own hands after 13 years of military dictatorship.”

Ebiseni, who said he was an active participant and witness in the events surrounding the election, described the poll won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola as a “social contract” between the people and their leaders, based on the democratic right to freely choose government.

He stressed that democracy places responsibility on leaders to protect lives, property, and ensure improved living conditions for citizens, adding that governance must remain firmly rooted in civilian authority and democratic principles.

Ebiseni also called for national unity in addressing Nigeria’s ongoing challenges, warning that the country must avoid actions that could further deepen divisions or instability.

He further advocated structural reforms in the Nigerian federation, saying true federalism remains essential to strengthening national cohesion and governance effectiveness.

According to him, the lessons of June 12 continue to resonate in contemporary Nigeria, particularly in the areas of democratic accountability, electoral integrity, and political restructuring.
