FG Arraigns Over 600 Terrorism Suspects, Reaffirms Commitment to Crushing Insecurity

The Federal Government on Monday reaffirmed its determination to tackle terrorism and insecurity across Nigeria as it commenced another phase of terrorism-related prosecutions involving more than 600 suspects before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Speaking after the arraignment proceedings, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, said the ongoing trials underscore the administration's commitment to combating terrorism and safeguarding the nation.

According to the AGF, approximately 490 suspects were arraigned on the first day, while another 84 suspects are scheduled to appear before the court, bringing the total number of cases in the current phase to over 600, including matters carried over from previous proceedings.

Fagbemi stressed that the government would not tolerate terrorism in any form, noting that ten judges have been assigned exclusively to handle terrorism-related cases in a bid to accelerate the judicial process and ensure timely justice.

The minister disclosed that convictions have already been secured in previous phases of the trials, adding that comprehensive records would be released upon the conclusion of the exercise.

In one of the cases, Justice Emeka Nwite convicted and sentenced Bello Liman, also known as "Alhaji Bello Doctor," to 30 years imprisonment for concealing information about a notorious terrorist leader and providing support to terrorist activities in Zamfara State.

Similarly, Justice Binta Nyako sentenced a 55-year-old farmer, Ali Mustapha, to 15 years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to concealing information about the activities of the Boko Haram insurgent group in Borno State.

The ongoing trials form part of the Federal Government's broader strategy to strengthen national security, hold terror suspects accountable, and restore public confidence in the country's justice and security institutions.

Authorities have reiterated that efforts to dismantle terrorist networks, prosecute offenders, and secure communities across the country will remain a top priority of the administration.
