Enugu NDC Aspirants Reject Primary Election Process, Pass Vote of No Confidence on Party Leadership
A group known as the Enugu Forum of Aspirants under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly rejected the outcome and process of the party’s primary elections in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a communiqué issued after a meeting held on Monday, June 15, 2026, the aspirants declared that no valid primary election was conducted in the state, alleging that both direct primaries and consensus arrangements were absent despite being required under party guidelines and the Electoral Act 2026 (as amended).
The group accused a “small clique” of hijacking the party structure and excluding aspirants and grassroots stakeholders from participating in the selection process. They also raised concerns over alleged financial exploitation and lack of internal democracy within the party’s state leadership.
The forum further passed a vote of no confidence on several party leaders in Enugu State, including Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo and other officials, accusing them of high-handedness, bias, and failure to adhere to party rules governing candidate selection.
They also alleged that the process was marked by manipulation, irregularities, and actions inconsistent with democratic principles, warning that dissatisfaction within the party could lead to defections if not urgently addressed.
In their resolutions, the aspirants called on the national leadership of the NDC to reject any candidate list submitted by the Enugu State leadership, insisting that such lists were not credible.
They further demanded the immediate intervention of the party’s national leadership, including the establishment of an independent committee to oversee fresh and transparent primaries in the state.
The forum also appealed for a high-level stakeholders’ meeting involving national and state leaders, aspirants, and representatives from all senatorial zones in Enugu State to resolve the internal crisis and restore unity.
Despite the grievances, the aspirants reaffirmed their loyalty to the national leadership of the party and expressed commitment to the party’s presidential structure led by its national figures ahead of the 2027 elections.
The communiqué was signed by several aspirants from across Enugu State and adopted on June 13, 2026.
