DSS, Military Foil Alleged Plot to Kidnap WAEC Candidates in Southeast, Recover Arms Cache

A joint security operation involving the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army has reportedly prevented an alleged kidnapping plot targeting students writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in parts of the Southeast.

According to security sources, the suspected plot was linked to members of the outlawed Eastern Security Network (ESN), who allegedly planned coordinated attacks on selected schools in Enugu, Anambra, and Imo states.

Acting on intelligence reports, DSS operatives and military personnel reportedly raided a suspected ESN armoury in the Agbani area of Enugu State. During the operation, security forces recovered eight AK-47 rifles, 12 AK-47 magazines, 323 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, a smoke grenade launcher, teargas canisters, and several items of clothing resembling NYSC uniforms.

Sources claimed intelligence suggested the suspects intended to disguise themselves in NYSC attire while carrying out the planned attacks. Several suspects were also reportedly arrested during the operation.

In a separate operation around the Garki area of Enugu State, another suspected armoury was uncovered. Security operatives recovered a rocket launcher, rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) accessories, AK-47 rifles, magazines, grenades, teargas equipment, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

The operations come amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat kidnapping, armed violence, and attacks on security personnel across the region.

Security authorities have not yet issued a detailed official statement on the operations, but sources described the recoveries as a significant breakthrough in efforts to safeguard students, schools, and public institutions during the examination period.

The development has heightened attention on security across the Southeast, particularly as students continue to participate in the ongoing WASSCE examinations under increased security monitoring.
