Delta Governor Oborevwori Sparks Debate After Calling Anti-Tinubu Vote “Evil” Over Alleged Family and Political Ties

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has sparked widespread political debate following remarks in which he described voting against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as “evil,” linking his position to political alignment and perceived family ties.

Speaking during a televised interview, Oborevwori referenced the Delta heritage of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, noting her maternal roots in Warri and her traditional title conferred by the Olu of Warri. He suggested that these cultural and familial connections could influence political support in the state.

The governor further expressed confidence that major ethnic groups in Delta State, including the Itsekiri, Urhobo, and some Igbo communities, would align politically with the ruling party ahead of future elections.

He also reiterated his belief that strengthening political unity with the federal government remains important for development, pointing to increased federal allocations to Delta State under the current administration as evidence of cooperation.

However, the comments have generated strong reactions on social media, with critics arguing that voting decisions should be based on governance performance, economic conditions, and accountability rather than ethnic or family ties.

Some commentators pointed to ongoing national challenges such as inflation, insecurity, and unemployment, insisting that citizens retain the right to freely choose their leaders regardless of political endorsements.

As political discussions intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, analysts say such statements highlight the growing tension between political loyalty, identity politics, and voter independence in Nigeria’s democratic space.
