Court Nullifies National Assembly’s ₦110 Billion Vehicle and Allowance Scheme, Cites Procurement Law Breach
A Federal High Court has ruled against the National Assembly over its controversial ₦110 billion vehicle and allowance scheme, declaring the expenditure illegal and inconsistent with public procurement laws.
The court held that the allocation and utilization of the funds failed to comply with established procurement procedures, describing the process as a violation of due process and accountability standards expected in public finance management.
In its judgment, the court further stated that public funds must be expended strictly in line with the provisions of the law, emphasizing that legislative privileges do not extend to actions that undermine transparency or public trust.
The decision has been widely described as a major development in Nigeria’s ongoing debate over governance accountability and the management of public resources.
The ruling also reaffirmed the principle that all arms of government are subject to the rule of law, particularly in matters involving budgetary approvals, procurement processes, and expenditure of public funds.
Reactions have continued to trail the judgment, with civil society groups and anti-corruption advocates welcoming the decision as a step toward strengthening fiscal discipline and institutional accountability.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the leadership of the National Assembly nor federal government representatives had issued an official response to the court’s decision.
