BREAKING: Ebonyi Governor Calls for Review of University Courses, Questions Relevance of Some Degrees
Abakaliki, Ebonyi State — Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has sparked debate after suggesting that some university courses, including English Language and Religious Studies, may no longer be relevant in today’s job market and should be reviewed or removed from university curricula.
The governor made the remarks while speaking on the need to reform Nigeria’s education system to better align with modern job demands and skill acquisition.
According to him, several courses currently offered in universities do not provide clear employment opportunities for graduates, arguing that students spend years studying subjects that may not translate into practical jobs after graduation.
He specifically mentioned courses such as English Language and Religious Studies, stating that they could be restructured or shortened, and replaced with more skill-based and creative programs that improve employability.
Nwifuru also called on university authorities and education policymakers to work together in reviewing academic programs to ensure they match current economic realities and promote entrepreneurship, innovation, and technical skills among students.
The statement has since generated mixed reactions, with some stakeholders supporting the call for curriculum reform, while others argue that humanities and language studies remain essential for communication, culture, education, and national development.
Education experts are expected to weigh in on the proposal as discussions around curriculum relevance continue.
