APC Enugu Senatorial Candidate Ikeje Asogwa Faces Backlash Over Resurfaced Assault Allegations Ahead of By-Election
Severe political tension has erupted in Enugu North Senatorial District following renewed public backlash against the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, as voters prepare for the upcoming by-election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
The by-election became necessary following the death of Labour Party Senator, Okey Ezea, who passed away in a Lagos hospital in November 2025.
However, Asogwa’s campaign has recently come under intense scrutiny after allegations from his time as Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB) resurfaced online and across local political discussions.
According to claims circulating in public discourse and referenced in earlier petitions, Asogwa was allegedly involved in a 2017 incident in which a serving Permanent Secretary, Mr. Onagu Ogbodo, was assaulted within ENSUBEB premises in Enugu. The allegations include claims of physical assault and public humiliation, which reportedly triggered widespread condemnation at the time.
Witness accounts contained in earlier petitions alleged that the incident occurred inside the agency’s headquarters and drew reactions from labour unions, civil society groups, and traditional institutions, some of which demanded accountability and disciplinary action.
Although the allegations remain part of public record debates and have not resulted in a fresh legal pronouncement, they have resurfaced strongly in the current political season, with critics arguing that they raise questions about the suitability of the APC candidate for legislative office.
The situation has fueled heightened political rhetoric across the senatorial district, with grassroots groups and constituents expressing divided opinions as campaigns intensify ahead of the polls.
As of the time of filing this report, Chief Ikeje Asogwa has not issued a new official response to the resurfaced allegations, while efforts to obtain his comment have been unsuccessful.
With less than a week to the election, political observers say the controversy may shape voter sentiment in what is already shaping up to be a tightly contested race in Enugu North Senatorial District.
