Aisha Yesufu Denies Stepping Down, Says She Accepted Outcome for Party Unity and 2027 Presidential Focus
Aisha Yesufu has strongly refuted media reports suggesting she stepped down from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race in the Federal Capital Territory, insisting that such headlines misrepresent her position.
In a statement directed at media houses, Yesufu emphasized that she did not withdraw from the race but maintained that a contested and flawed primary election was conducted, resulting in the declaration of another candidate.
She stated that despite what she described as irregularities in the process, she chose not to escalate internal divisions within the party, explaining that her decision was guided by the need to preserve unity within the NDC at a critical political moment.
According to her, the broader political objective for her remains the 2027 general elections, particularly the presidential contest, which she described as the most important focus of the current political cycle.
Yesufu further noted that her political energy and support will now be directed toward backing what she described as a stronger candidate for the presidency, stressing that internal disputes should not distract from the party’s larger national ambitions.
She urged media organizations to correct what she called misleading headlines, insisting that her position had been wrongly framed as a withdrawal from the race.
“Let no media house rewrite history,” she stated, warning that posterity would judge how the narrative is being presented.
Her clarification has since generated wide reactions across political circles, with supporters praising her stance as strategic, while critics continue to debate the circumstances surrounding the disputed primary.
As of now, the NDC has not issued an official response to her latest remarks.
