Violence Rocks FUTO as Student Allegedly Dies After Man O’ War Incident, Campus Protest Turns Destructive

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) was plunged into crisis following reports of a student’s death allegedly linked to an assault by members of the Man O’ War campus security outfit.

According to eyewitness accounts and circulating reports, the student was accused of stealing ₦13,000 from a commander within the group. It was alleged that he was subjected to severe physical punishment by members of the Man O’ War unit despite pleas from bystanders.

The student was later confirmed dead, sparking outrage among the student population and triggering widespread protests across the campus.

Angry students reportedly responded by destroying properties associated with the Man O’ War group, with some structures set ablaze as tensions escalated. The situation reportedly caused panic on campus, with security personnel struggling to contain the unrest.

In the aftermath of the violence, reports indicate that the university authorities have taken steps to suspend or disband the Man O’ War unit pending further investigation into the incident. However, there has been no detailed official statement clarifying the circumstances leading to the student’s death.

The Vice Chancellor of FUTO, Prof. Nnenna Oti, has yet to publicly address the incident at the time of filing this report, as calls mount for a thorough investigation and accountability.

The tragedy has sparked renewed debate about the role, conduct, and oversight of campus security groups, with many calling for urgent reforms to prevent future occurrences.

Authorities are expected to launch a formal investigation into both the death of the student and the subsequent campus violence.
