The hardworking commercial driver reportedly lost his life after sustaining severe physical injuries from an aggressive encounter with state revenue enforcement agents at the popular Gariki Bus Terminal (Afor Awkunanaw) in Enugu.
According to family accounts and eyewitness reports, the incident unfolded on September 30, 2026, inside the terminal, when members of the government tax enforcement unit allegedly subjected Mr. Nwobodo to violent physical assault—including a heavy blow—while enforcing revenue collections. The severe internal and physical trauma he suffered from the attack ultimately led to his untimely demise.
The tragic news of his death on Nigeria's Independence Day anniversary sent shockwaves across the state, sparking widespread grief among commercial transporters, family members, and community stakeholders who are demanding an immediate end to brutal enforcement tactics.
In an official statement released by the family through Sen. Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, the people of Umunwobodo, Umuanita, Anichimode kindred of Umuatugbuoma, Akegbe Ugwu, expressed utter devastation over the sudden loss of their son, brother, uncle, and father. The family confirmed that formal burial arrangements remain suspended pending the outcome of thorough criminal investigations.
Reactions and calls for swift justice have continued to pour in from civil advocates and political leaders across Enugu State:
Friends of the last Friday expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, lamenting the brutal treatment meted out to Mr. Nwobodo and charging state authorities and law enforcement agencies to immediately bring every culprit involved to book.
PES Chukwudi Louis Ani, writing for the Lion Building Media Team for Nwakaibe, appealed directly to the Enugu State Government to guarantee an open, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death to ensure the family receives full justice.
Ugochukwu Ezeh underscored the profound sense of loss gripping Awkunanaw, emphasizing that no revenue effort justifies the loss of human life. He urged relevant security agencies to act swiftly, transparently, and without bias, stating, "One life has been lost. The least his family and community deserve is the truth and justice."
As tension and grief loom over the Gariki motor park and surrounding communities, residents, civil rights groups, and online commentators continue to call on Governor Peter Mbah, state police leadership, and relevant oversight agencies to immediately arrest the task force members responsible and ensure that justice is served for Friday Nwobodo.
