The Smart School Gamble: How Centralized Ward Hubs Threaten Rural Access and Expose the Limits of Mbah’s PR Governance
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s flagship Smart Green Schools Initiative—promising 260 model hubs equipped with solar power, ICT laboratories, and robotics curricula across Enugu State—is increasingly coming under severe public scrutiny for exposing a fundamental flaw in execution: centralizing smart schools by political ward rather than decentralizing them by community.
In a scathing critique titled "Peter Mbah & The Smart School Gamble," Evang Prince Sam of Ugbo Ancient Kingdom outlines how the administration's decision to site only one school per ward creates dangerous logistical and safety barriers for young primary school pupils in rural local government areas.
The critical structural failures and operational risks embedded in the administration's project design include:
Unrealistic Commuting Distances: In geographically massive areas like Ward 9 in Awgu LGA, placing the single Smart School at Owelli Girls forces 6 to 12-year-old pupils from surrounding communities—including Ugbo, Ugbonabor, Ngene Ugbo, Ogugu, and Amoli—to undertake exhausting 4km to 6km daily treks.
Severe Terrain and Security Risks: Children in Ugbo Okpala and Ugbonabor, situated over 1,000 feet above sea level, are subjected to daily commutes over steep, rocky terrain and unpoliced isolated routes, raising serious safety concerns for parents.
Abandonment of Historical Community Infrastructure: Consolidating resources into one ward facility leaves established primary schools built through local community efforts facing systematic decay and neglect, wiping out historic educational foundations that have produced generations of professionals.
Preference for PR Optics over Practical Equity: Siting centralized hubs for press releases while leaving neighboring forgotten hamlets without accessible facilities highlights a broader pattern of cosmetic governance that puts political branding ahead of child welfare.
Lack of Long-Term Sustainability: Concentrating all investment into single ward hubs creates extreme vulnerability to future political policy shifts, defunding, or abandonment, rather than building durable, decentralized infrastructure across every community.
Governor Mbah’s educational reform proves that a revolution children cannot safely walk to is not progress, but administrative failure. True governance requires stepping away from grandstanding initiatives and ensuring accessible, safe, and equitable public infrastructure for every child in Enugu State.
