Reliable Energy Data Critical to Nigeria’s Development and Energy Transition — Energy Commission

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (Energy Commission of Nigeria) has reiterated the critical role of reliable energy data in driving effective governance, economic planning, and sustainable development across the country.

According to the commission, accurate, timely, and credible energy statistics are essential for informed policy formulation, strategic investment decisions, and strengthening Nigeria’s credibility within the global energy community.

Speaking on the importance of data-driven governance, the commission noted that the collection, management, and harmonization of energy statistics go beyond routine administrative functions and represent a strategic national responsibility.

The ECN stressed that dependable energy information provides policymakers, investors, researchers, and development partners with the tools required to make sound decisions capable of improving energy access, boosting economic growth, and enhancing national competitiveness.

The commission further stated that strengthening Nigeria’s energy data architecture is particularly important as the country pursues its energy transition objectives, expands renewable energy adoption, and seeks to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.

According to the agency, a transparent and harmonized national energy data system remains fundamental to ensuring that development strategies are based on verifiable evidence rather than assumptions.

Industry stakeholders have consistently argued that robust data systems are necessary for attracting investment, identifying infrastructure gaps, improving resource allocation, and monitoring progress toward national energy goals.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance data quality, improve coordination among relevant institutions, and strengthen the country's capacity to generate reliable statistics for long-term planning and sustainable development.
