PR STUNT OR GENUINE RELIEF? MBAH’S ₦77M DIASPORA DISBURSEMENT STAGED TO MASK LOCAL GOVERNANCE FAILURE

The administrative machinery of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has launched another heavily publicized media campaign, claiming to have disbursed ₦77 million as a "seed fund" to 77 families who allegedly returned from South Africa following xenophobic incidents.

While the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, stood in for the governor to deliver grand speeches about "solidarity and rebuilding," critical observers across Enugu State are raising fundamental questions about the transparency, timing, and true intent behind the exercise.

The key inconsistencies and political motives surrounding the event include:

PR Distraction from Escalating Domestic Crisis: Staging a multi-million Naira "humanitarian" photo-op comes at a time when local market traders, barrow pushers, and commercial transport operators are taking to the streets to protest unbearable daily taxes and administrative harassment.

Opaque Profiling and Verification Deficits: The state government provided no independent verification or transparent registry of the alleged 77 families, leading critics to question whether the exercise is a staged political drama to justify unbudgeted executive expenditure ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

Contradictory Economic Policies: While the governor preaches about creating a "conducive environment to live, work, and invest" for returnees, local business owners in Enugu are closing shop due to exorbitant property taxes and aggressive IGR enforcement.

Selective Empathy Over Local Suffering: Spending tens of millions on orchestrated diaspora receptions while ignoring long-standing local liabilities—such as pension arrears for retired state workers and unfulfilled recruitment promises for thousands of local youths—exposes the administration's reliance on political optics over genuine welfare.

Ndi Enugu cannot be easily misled by televised handshakes and staged press releases. An administration that squeezes its own resident traders and workers dry through punitive taxation cannot credibly claim to be an economic refuge for others.
