Oyo Police Dismiss Rumoured Bandit Attack in Ogbomoso, Warn Against Fake News
The Oyo State Police Command has clarified that there was no bandit attack or security invasion in Ogbomoso and adjoining communities, following widespread panic triggered by rumours circulating on Monday, May 19, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the alarm began after reports emerged alleging that suspected armed bandits had invaded areas around Are-Ago High School in Ogbomoso.
The development reportedly caused fear among residents, students, and neighbouring communities, prompting the immediate deployment of police patrol and surveillance teams to the affected areas.
Police investigations later revealed that the individuals who sparked suspicion included an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps attached to the Kwara State Command and two civilians who were visiting the area.
Authorities explained that misunderstanding and tension escalated after concerns were raised within the school environment over unfamiliar persons seen near the premises, leading to the rapid spread of unverified information among students and residents.
The police stated that no security breach, attack, or invasion occurred, adding that normalcy has since been restored across Ogbomoso, Ajaawa, and surrounding communities.
The command also warned against the spread of fake news and unverified security reports, noting that misinformation could create unnecessary panic, disrupt public peace, and undermine ongoing security efforts.
Residents were advised to verify security-related information through official channels before sharing, while those deliberately spreading false information may face investigation and prosecution under the law.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State further urged members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies by reporting credible information capable of improving public safety.
