Nsukka Catholic Diocese Faults Governor Mbah’s Aide Over Comments on Ogige Market Demolition
The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka has distanced itself from partisan politics and defended remarks made by the Bishop of Nsukka regarding the demolition of shops at Ogige Market, Nsukka.
In a statement issued by the Diocese’s Director of Communications, Fr. Emmanuel I. Asadu, the Church accused Mr. Reuben Onyishi, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Peter Mbah, of dragging the Bishop into a political controversy.
According to the Diocese, the Bishop made the remarks while attending the burial of catechist John Attah, who reportedly died after suffering health complications following the demolition of his shop and those of other family members at Ogige Market.
The Diocese stated that the Bishop’s comments were an expression of pastoral concern for affected residents and not a political statement or campaign message.
It emphasized that the Church remains non-partisan and is committed to the pastoral care of souls and the defense of human dignity.
The statement further noted that it is the responsibility of the Church to speak out against injustice and human suffering, regardless of who is responsible for such actions.
The Diocese also urged political actors to avoid what it described as intimidation and attempts to distort the Bishop’s message, maintaining that no amount of political rhetoric can erase the experiences of those affected by the market demolition.
Reaffirming its commitment to standing with the people, the Diocese said it would continue to guide the conscience of public office holders while advocating for justice and the welfare of citizens.
