Legal Battle Line Drawn: Peter Obi Slams Kenneth Okonkwo With ₦5 Billion Defamation Suit Over Bribery Allegations
A high-profile legal battle has erupted within Nigeria's political landscape following a scathing, formal pre-litigation notice served to popular Nollywood actor and politician, Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo. The legal action, initiated on the explicit instructions of the former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, comes in response to highly damaging allegations leveled against him during a live broadcast.
The dispute stems from statements made by Okonkwo on June 8, 2026, during his appearance on Channels Television’s popular breakfast program, Sunrise Daily. As detailed in the legal documents filed by Obi's solicitors, Alex Ejesieme (SAN) & Co (Madiba Chambers), across pages, Okonkwo allegedly accused Obi and southeastern NDC party leaders of orchestrating a widespread criminal racket.
Specifically, Okonkwo claimed that Obi informed legislative aspirants that any individual seeking to contest on the NDC platform must pay a mandatory bribe of ₦10 million to the party and its caucus leaders. He further asserted that he possessed documentary proof and payment receipts to back the claim, adding that Obi personally compiled candidate lists from his room at the Johnwood Hotel to scam aspirants, and routinely travels abroad to illicitly collect funds.
