Kennedy Iyere Announces Peaceful Protest at INEC Over Alleged Threats to Democracy in Enugu

Abuja, Nigeria — Prominent humanitarian activist Comrade Kennedy Iyere, has announced plans to lead a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja on 17 August 2026, calling on Nigerians, civil society organisations, members of the international community, and democracy advocates to participate.

In a video message announcing the demonstration, Iyere said the protest is intended to draw national and international attention to what he described as growing threats to democratic participation, political freedoms, and electoral integrity in Enugu State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Iyere, the protest will serve as a platform to demand greater accountability and safeguard the democratic rights of citizens. He alleged that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah has created an environment that discourages political opposition and suppresses dissent. He further claimed that opposition leaders, including the PDP governorship candidate, Chief Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, have been subjected to political intimidation, blackmail, and persecution. Governor Mbah has previously rejected similar allegations.

Iyere also recounted what he described as his personal experience in Enugu, alleging that his safety was threatened following a youth empowerment programme that attracted a large turnout. He claimed the incident marked the beginning of what he considers a sustained campaign of hostility against him because of his public engagements and advocacy.

The humanitarian activist further alleged that individuals who criticise the state government are frequently subjected to intimidation, arrests, and prosecution because of their political views. He argued that such actions, if left unchecked, could undermine democratic principles, weaken political competition, and erode public confidence in Nigeria's electoral process.

He said the protest will call on INEC, the Federal Government, security agencies, civil society organisations, and the international community to ensure that all political actors operate within the confines of the law and that the 2027 elections in Enugu State are conducted in a free, fair, peaceful, transparent, and credible manner.

Iyere urged all participants to remain peaceful, orderly, and law-abiding throughout the demonstration, emphasizing that the objective of the protest is to promote democratic values, political tolerance, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of the constitutional rights of every Nigerian.

He also disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant public authorities have been formally notified of the planned protest in line with applicable legal requirements.

The planned demonstration is expected to generate significant public attention as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with observers closely monitoring developments relating to governance, political participation, and electoral credibility in Enugu State.
