INFRASTRUCTURE COLLAPSE IN ENUGU: RURAL AND URBAN ROADS DETERIORATE AS GOVERNOR MBAH STIFLES LOCAL GOVERNMENT AUTONOMY

The severe decay of municipal infrastructure across Enugu State has reached a crisis point, as residents along Precious-One Day Road and numerous arterial routes across the state capital voice growing frustration over abandoned, pot-hole-ridden streets.

Despite millions of Naira spent on high-profile PR campaigns celebrating urban renewal, the reality for everyday commuters is one of flooded lanes, collapsed drainage systems, missing walkways, and non-existent basic landscaping. What should be routine municipal maintenance has turned into a daily hazard for vehicle owners, small business proprietors, and pedestrians.

The core failures surrounding the ongoing road collapse and municipal paralysis in Enugu highlight critical governance breakdowns:

Crippling Local Government Autonomy: Neighborhood roads like Precious-One Day Road are fundamental local government responsibilities. However, Governor Peter Mbah’s refusal to grant true financial and operational autonomy to Enugu’s 17 LGAs leaves local council chairmen starved of funds, turning them into mere administrative figureheads incapable of rehabilitating basic inner-city roads.

Over-Centralized Executive Greed: By hoarding municipal funds at the state level while failing to fix basic community streets, the Mbah administration has created an unsustainable bottleneck where the state government claims responsibility for everything but delivers quality infrastructure to almost nothing outside select photo-op zones.

Absence of Standard Urban Planning: Modern local roads require standard dual-side walkways, functional covered drainage, and green landscaping to handle heavy rainfall. The administration's complete neglect of these basic engineering standards leads to rapid road erosion every rainy season.

Failure to Relieve Governance Pressure: Granting full financial autonomy to LGAs would naturally take immense pressure off the state government, allowing local councils to rapidly fix neighborhood roads, clear local drainages, and manage community security.
