HUMAN CATASTROPHE IN GREATER AWGU: FLOODS SUBMERGE MPU AND OKPANKU WHILE NENWENTA RESEVOIR COLLAPSE WIPES OUT ENTIRE FAMILY AS REPRESENTATIVE LAWMAKER REMAINS SILENT

Grief, horror, and profound anger have enveloped communities across Aninri and Awgu Local Government Areas as severe environmental neglect and crumbling infrastructure culminated in a series of deadly disasters that have shattered lives, destroyed homes, and left thousands of families homeless.

The catastrophe unfolded in Mpu and Okpanku in Aninri LGA, where over two days of unyielding rainfall triggered massive overflows from the uncompleted Ivo River Dam project. The surging floodwaters submerged 14 agrarian villages, drowned two young brothers aged seven and eight, collapsed more than 10 residential homes, and cut off the vital Ivo Bridge, isolating entire communities from emergency relief. Displaced mothers, elderly citizens, and children are now crammed into churches and public town halls, watching their submerged cassava and yam farms rot beneath the water.

While Aninri groaned under the rising flood, a separate but equally horrifying tragedy struck Nenwenta in Awgu LGA. Amid heavy rain and landslides, a massive elevated water reservoir collapsed due to years of structural neglect, crushing a residential home and killing six members of a single family—a husband, his wife, their three children, and their grandmother. In what can only be described as a bittersweet miracle, the family’s four-year-old boy was swept away by the raging torrents and vanished into the storm. Against all odds, after a harrowing 24-hour ordeal that left his community praying in despair, the little boy was discovered alive miles away, bringing tearful relief to rescuers who pulled his fragile body from the mud and rushed him to medical care.

The human cost of these twin disasters has been compounded by severe public outrage over the perceived abandonment by those elected to protect the constituency. Despite the loss of innocent lives, the destruction of entire family lineages, and the collapse of local agrarian economies, the member representing the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Anayo Onwuegbu, has failed to issue any official statement, visit the affected sites, or offer a clear relief roadmap to his grieving constituents.

Community leaders and heartbroken residents have openly condemned this political indifference, pointing out that while federal lawmakers in other regions rush to deploy emergency relief funds and mobilize NEMA interventions for their people, Greater Awgu has been left to suffer in total abandonment. As displaced families mourn their dead and struggle to survive in makeshift shelters, the silence from their federal representative stands as a painful reminder of the leadership deficit facing the constituency during its hour of greatest need.
