Grassroots Influence Prevails as Chief Chukwugozie Nwachukwu Defeats Cubana Chief Priest in APC Federal Constituency Primary

The APC primary election for the Orlu/Orsu/Oru East Federal Constituency in Imo State has produced a major political outcome, as Chief Chukwugozie Canice Moore Nwachukwu, popularly known as Omeogo, emerged victorious over celebrity businessman and social personality Cubana Chief Priest.

Chief Nwachukwu, widely regarded as a long-standing political ally of Hope Uzodimma, is believed to have maintained a close relationship with the governor dating back to their political association during the era of the late Maurice Ibekwe. Political observers describe the victory as another demonstration of the governor’s preference for tested loyalty, grassroots acceptance, and established political structures within the constituency.

Despite having limited formal educational qualifications as indicated in his nomination documents, Omeogo has continued to command strong grassroots support across the federal constituency. His political influence and local acceptance have reportedly played significant roles in previous electoral victories within the region, including support structures that contributed to the emergence of Governor Uzodimma.

With this latest victory at the APC primary poll, Chief Nwachukwu is now positioned to seek a third term in the House of Representatives, having first won election to the Green Chamber in 2019. Analysts note that the Orlu/Orsu/Oru East Federal Constituency remains politically strategic, particularly because it is the home constituency of Governor Uzodimma, making candidate selection highly sensitive and loyalty-driven.

The outcome has also sparked conversations about the political ambitions of Cubana Chief Priest, with some commentators suggesting that a gradual political journey beginning from the State House of Assembly could have provided a stronger foundation for future aspirations. Nonetheless, the primary election once again highlights the unpredictable nature of Nigerian politics, where grassroots structures and long-standing political relationships often outweigh popularity and celebrity influence.
