GOVERNOR ALEX OTTI LEADS TRIBUTES AT 60TH MEMORIAL ANNIVERSARY OF MAJOR GENERAL AGUIYI-IRONSI

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, led solemn tributes and wreath-laying ceremonies at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Conference Centre in Umuahia to mark the 60th memorial anniversary of Nigeria's first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, who was assassinated during the counter-coup of July 29, 1966.

​The commemorative event, attended by members of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, government officials, and community stakeholders, honored the life and legacy of the highly decorated military officer. Aguiyi-Ironsi, who rose through the ranks from his service in World War II and the United Nations Operation in the Congo to become Nigeria’s General Officer Commanding (GOC) and subsequent Head of State, was remembered for his steadfast commitment to national unity, administrative cohesion, and peace during one of the nation's most turbulent historical eras.

​During the ceremony, Governor Otti laid a memorial wreath in honor of the late General, reflecting on the historical sacrifices made by patriotic leaders to preserve the unity of Nigeria. Speakers at the event highlighted Aguiyi-Ironsi's legacy of selfless service and structural reform, emphasizing that his vision for a harmonious nation remains highly relevant as Nigeria continues to navigate contemporary socio-political and economic challenges.
