FINANCIAL TURMOIL AND WORKER UNREST THREATEN ENUGU AIRPORT CONCESSION DEAL AS FAAN STAFF PREPARE FOR MASS PROTEST
The handover of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, to concessionaire Aero Alliance Limited is unraveling into a deep administrative and operational crisis. Reports surrounding the deal reveal growing instability, financial bottlenecks, and deep-seated labor opposition.
A primary allegation disrupting the deal involves the alleged diversion of critical funds earmarked for airport rehabilitation by a former transport official, leaving Aero Alliance struggling to meet initial funding requirements and capital expenditure timelines. The concessionaire, which was brought in under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration to finance and upgrade the facility, reportedly faces internal confusion over whether to proceed with the venture given the prevailing uncertainty.
Simultaneously, tension has peaked among Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) personnel. Staff members report being subjected to harsh transitional conditions designed to absorb financial shortfalls directly from worker benefits and payrolls.
In response to the growing opacity of the transaction, joint aviation labor unions have scheduled a mass protest for Wednesday to demand immediate accountability from both the Enugu State Government and Aero Alliance. Workers argue that the concession model prioritizes political optics over practical realities, putting both their livelihoods and regional air travel at risk.
