Ezeme Rejects Enugu North Senatorial Bye-Election Result, Heads to Court Over Alleged Irregularities
The aftermath of the Enugu North Senatorial Bye-Election held on June 20, 2026 has taken a new turn as Barr. Nestor Ezeme, PhD, formally rejected the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insisting that the outcome does not represent the true will of the electorate.
Reacting to the declaration of Chief Ikeje Asogwa as the winner of the poll, Ezeme described the result as a “stolen mandate” and announced his decision to seek redress through the courts and other constitutional means available to him.
The opposition candidate alleged that the electoral process was characterised by violence, voter intimidation, ballot box snatching, alleged over-voting, and destruction of properties belonging to opposition parties. He also claimed that some opposition members were abducted during the election, with others allegedly detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and other locations, while some injured persons were receiving medical attention.
According to Ezeme, the conduct of the election failed to meet acceptable democratic standards and deprived the people of Enugu North of their right to freely elect their representative.
“The battle has just begun,” he stated, assuring his supporters that all legal and constitutional avenues would be explored to challenge the outcome and recover what he described as the people’s mandate.
He, however, urged his supporters, opposition members, and residents of Enugu North Senatorial District to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and committed to seeking justice through due process.
The rejection of the election result is expected to trigger a major legal and political contest in Enugu State, as attention now shifts to the courts where the allegations surrounding the conduct of the bye-election may be examined
