ENUGU PENSIONERS LAMENT ₦447 MONTHLY STIPEND DESPITE STATE'S ₦406.77B REVENUE, DEMAND ₦32,000 MINIMUM PENSION

Retirees and elderly public service veterans in Enugu State, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), have expressed deep outrage and despair over severe economic hardship, revealing that some members still receive monthly stipends as meager as ₦447.

​In a formal appeal directed to Governor Peter Mbah, the union highlighted the stark disparity between the state’s soaring internal and federal revenue profile—reported at ₦406.77 billion—and the dire living conditions of senior citizens who dedicated their productive years to public service.

​The retirees urged the Enugu State Government to harmonize pension payments and implement the ₦32,000 minimum pension rate in line with constitutional provisions and federal directives.

​Key Demands and Concerns Raised by the Pensioners

​Inhumane Monthly Earnings: The union revealed that hundreds of retirees in Enugu State continue to receive monthly pensions ranging between ₦447 and ₦3,000, amounts incapable of purchasing basic food items or essential medication in the current economic climate.

​Revenue Disparity: Pensioners pointed out that despite the state recording over ₦406.77 billion in combined revenue, the welfare of elderly retirees has remained neglected.

​Implementation of ₦32,000 Minimum Pension: The NUP called on Governor Peter Mbah to fulfill his administrative promises by immediately approving and enforcing the ₦32,000 minimum pension floor to cushion senior citizens against rising inflation.

​Harmonization and Backlog Settlements: The union further demanded the payment of outstanding gratuity backlogs and the harmonization of older pension structures with recent civil service salary adjustments across all state ministries, agencies, and local government councils.
