Enugu North Bye-Election: Growing Concerns Over Alleged Attempts to Undermine Electoral Integrity

Disturbing reports have emerged alleging the existence of a coordinated effort by certain political interests to compromise the integrity of the forthcoming Enugu North Senatorial Bye-Election scheduled for June 20, 2026.

According to these allegations, some electoral officials across the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district were reportedly invited to clandestine meetings and offered inducements aimed at influencing the electoral process. The alleged objective is to undermine the credibility of polling unit results and create opportunities for manipulation during collation.

Further allegations suggest possible interference with sensitive election materials, substitution of genuine polling unit results with fabricated figures, and the deployment of security personnel in ways that could intimidate voters, party agents, and election observers while facilitating electoral malpractice.

If proven true, such actions would constitute a serious threat to democratic governance, undermine public confidence in the electoral process, and violate the constitutional right of citizens to freely choose their representatives.

We therefore call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, election observers, civil society organizations, the media, and all stakeholders committed to democratic principles to closely monitor every stage of the electoral process. The distribution of materials, accreditation, voting, collation, and declaration of results must be conducted with maximum transparency and accountability.

We also urge political parties, accredited agents, election observers, and members of the public to remain vigilant, peaceful, and law-abiding throughout the election period. Citizens should carefully observe the process, document any irregularities, and report concerns through established legal and institutional channels.

Democracy can only thrive when the will of the electorate is respected. No individual, political party, or institution should be allowed to override the collective choice of the people through manipulation, intimidation, or abuse of power.

The people of Enugu North deserve a free, fair, credible, and transparent election. Every lawful vote must count, every valid result must be protected, and the final outcome must accurately reflect the decision of the electorate.

The message is clear: democracy must prevail, electoral integrity must be safeguarded, and the voice of the people must remain supreme.
