END OF AN ERA: NOLLYWOOD LEGEND OLU JACOBS PASSES ON AT 84

The African film industry has lost one of its absolute pillars following the passing of legendary actor, executive, and cultural patriarch Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, MFR, who died at the age of 84.

The news of his transition was officially announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on behalf of his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and the entire Jacobs family. Describing him as "The Lion of Lufodo," the family expressed gratitude for a extraordinary life lived and fought, while requesting privacy as they mourn the iconic statesman.

Born on July 11, 1942, in Abeokuta, Olu Jacobs’ journey into the performing arts began after attending an event by Nigerian theatre pioneer Chief Hubert Ogunde. His pursuit of artistic mastery led him to England, where he trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he established a formidable presence in international theatre and British television series, including The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, and Barlow at Large, as well as international film productions.

Upon returning to Nigeria, Olu Jacobs became a foundational pillar of modern Nollywood. Renowned for his commanding voice, regal carriage, and unmatched delivery of complex elder, royal, and patriarch roles, he brought immense credibility, discipline, and gravitas to African storytelling.

Alongside his wife, Joke Silva, he co-founded the Lufodo Group, contributing immensely to the professionalization of performing arts education, talent development, and stage productions across West Africa. His decades of service earned him top accolades, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor, the AMVCA Industry Merit Award, and national honors as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

The legacy of Olu Jacobs endures in the generations of actors he inspired, the foundational standards he set for African cinema, and the rich catalog of cinematic work he leaves behind.

May his noble soul rest in perfect peace.
