Criticism Is Not a Crime: Defending Free Speech, Accountability and Democracy in Enugu
Criticising government is not a crime. In a democracy, citizens have the right to question policies, demand accountability, highlight failures and speak truth to power without fear of intimidation, harassment or unlawful detention.
The growing concerns over alleged intimidation and detention of government critics in Enugu State should therefore be treated with seriousness. If reports that Kelwizzy was targeted because of his repeated criticism of the deplorable state of roads in Nsukka are accurate, the matter goes beyond one individual. It raises fundamental questions about the protection of free expression, civil liberties and democratic accountability.
A responsible government should welcome constructive criticism and respond to legitimate concerns with action, not intimidation. Poor roads, inadequate infrastructure and other challenges affecting citizens are public issues that deserve open discussion and urgent solutions.
Democracy cannot thrive where citizens are afraid to speak. Public office is a public trust, and those entrusted with power must remain accountable to the people they serve.
We therefore call on the relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law, respect the constitutional rights of every citizen and ensure that no individual is subjected to persecution merely for expressing an opinion or demanding better governance.
Enugu State deserves a government that listens, responds and delivers—not one that fears criticism.
The people must continue to defend the principles of democracy, accountability, justice and freedom of expression.
Release Kelwizzy Now!
Silence is not democracy. Fear is not governance. And intimidation has no place in a democratic society.
