Bishop Onah’s Simple Act of Kindness: A Powerful Lesson in Pastoral Charity
A quiet but deeply touching moment during the opening Mass of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the Osogbo Pastoral Center has offered a beautiful reminder of the power of compassion, humility, and pastoral charity.
During the celebration of the Holy Mass, an elderly woman innocently entered the sanctuary and took a seat directly behind the concelebrating bishops. Unaware that the sanctuary is ordinarily reserved for the officiating clergy and those assisting at the altar, she simply settled down to participate in the celebration.
An usher approached her politely and attempted to direct her to another location. However, before the situation could become uncomfortable, Most Rev. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, gently intervened.
Rather than allowing the elderly woman to feel unwelcome or embarrassed, Bishop Onah asked that she be allowed to remain and worship peacefully beside them.
It was a simple gesture, but its significance was profound.
In that brief moment, Bishop Onah demonstrated that pastoral ministry is not only about observing rules and protocols but also about recognising the dignity of every person and responding with compassion when circumstances call for understanding.
His action reflects the spirit of Christ, who consistently placed love, mercy, human dignity, and compassion at the heart of His ministry.
The incident also serves as a reminder that the Church is called to be a welcoming home for all—especially the elderly, the vulnerable, and those who may not always understand every liturgical or ecclesiastical protocol.
Sometimes, the most powerful homilies are not delivered from the pulpit. They are expressed through simple acts of kindness.
Bishop Onah’s decision to welcome the elderly woman quietly communicated a profound Christian message: there is always room for love, dignity, and compassion in the house of God.
May such examples of humility and pastoral sensitivity continue to inspire the faithful and remind us all that true Christian leadership is ultimately expressed through love and service.
